Thinking of DIY Wedding Decor?

Don't get me wrong, I love creative ideas and crafty people!  I often hear people express that they are DIY'ing some decor elements during consultations.  It is a great way to add some flair and personal touch to your special day.  With Pinterest and internet images showcasing unique ideas, anyone can feel their inner "Martha Stewart" calling.  Let me give some tips from my own experience if you are thinking of going this route...

DIY saves you $$$$$$$

Not necessarily.  Sourcing and purchasing items needed for a project is only the beginning.  Factor in gathering the items, assembly and then delivering them to the venue and setting them up the way you envisioned. I suggest you bulk up on supplies in case some get damaged or for the unforeseen mistakes that happen.  My advice; make ONE sample.  Bring it to your venue in a meeting prior to your event and set it up.  You will have good idea of how much money, time and work it will be to properly execute your DIY.  Take the Girl Guides motto here and "Be Prepared".  You will not have time for surprises on the day of the event!

Friends & Family Staffing Services...

People generally under estimate the time it takes to tackle a DIY project.  Do not assume that your FiancĂ©, Bridal Party or Family will help you out.  Ask for support and be grateful to those lending their time and services.  Make a schedule and outline times when you want to have a project completed.  If you are DIY'ing your centerpieces make sure you have people ready to assemble and properly place your MASTERPIECE on event day.  People often make the mistake assuming that they will have time on their wedding day.  Between hair, make up and nerves there is little time left for last minute details.
**Please do not forget, at the end of the party, it YOUR responsibility to remove your product that is left over.  It is not glamorous to see the Bride schlepping decor at the end of her party. Be sure to have provisions in place!

PROS vs JOES

Sometimes it is better to get the expert to do it than to stress about it.  There is a reason why a professional can make it look easy, PRACTICE!  If you want a certain amount of detail and do not want to come across as a Bridezilla, ask for help.  Yeah, it will cost you, but it is well WORTH it.  A professional may offer a different approach or reliable vendors that can make the project simplified.  You might just realize you should have gone this route from the start.

BUT, I don't want to negatively portray all DIYs.  Some brides & bridesmaids have made AMAZING favors, menus, table numbers, invitations, centerpieces, cakes and candles.  I have the privilege of decorating so many Weddings that I appreciate a great DIY.  I hope you can take some tips when trying this for yourself.  Keep calm & Craft on!

What's in a Backdrop?

Backdrops served as a Main Focus throughout history, starting with theatre.  The backdrop would frame the stage and enhance the setting of any show.  Is is not uncommon now for a backdrop to be used in a Wedding Reception to serve the same function.  Many brides come to Decor with Grandeur and want that WOW factor!  Something that will distinguish them from the rest of the party and frame their lovely setting, even if just for one evening.  I want to highlight some of different elements and swagging techniques that can go into a backdrop that will enhance any wedding and make it a "Show Stopper"!

Contrast is popular!  This backdrop POPS because it is black on white.  Adding elements like chandeliers update the setting and make it more contemporary. Patterns and damask would give you a similar feel.  There is no mistaking who is the focal point in this wedding.
White on white elegance! This backdrop enhances it setting by a chandelier & LED glow.  Adding elements like the candelabras with florals made the room flow with connecting elements.  Lighting can make the difference when not experimenting with colour.
A Canopy is an interesting and different way to distinguish your head table.  Just enough room for TWO!  At Decor with Grandeur we love our chandeliers and love the opportunity to add them to your setting. Really think about your venue and what it already offers.  Sometimes you do not require a large backdrop for you to stand out.  A picturesque couple table for a fantasy bride!

There are many ways to swag draping.  It does not always have to be the traditional look.  Fashion can be interpreted in your swagging applications.  See a dress and love how it "hangs or drapes" off a frame?  Replicate it!   We carry a variety of different textures and sewn backdrops.  From a mature theatrical Austrian pleat to a more modern coin drop option, your backdrop should give dimension and play with texture.  Soft touches and finishes really make your setting unique.
A great tie-back can often give you a elegant look at a better price.
Here are some examples of tie back decor! We have many options for decorating our fabric.  Including crystal strands and more uplighting!
Lastly, you may want to get away from fabric and take a NEW TREND approach.  Paper Flower partitions are in demand and add texture and depth to your event!

Opulent Grandeur

The menus were created by covering glass cylinders with floral paper and accessorizing them with a crystal border.

The table centrepiece were filled with million star flowers in a white shade and each one was pin light from above.

There were two lounge settings for guests to sit around the bar area and enjoy their drinks.

You will notice that this venue has coloured LED lights in the recessed decorative ceiling therefore giving the reception different looks with a press of a button.

The centrepeice had a collar of ivory satin ribbon and we created a large bow and further added a crystal brooch.

The bride's mother hand made each of the party favours which contained chocolate truffles.

This picture depicts the advantage of pin-lighting and the great impact it adds to the room.

This mirrored pedestal is a great mix of modern design with vintage flare with the legs made from metal.

Our popular ballerina head table with a custom fitted overlay matched the top of the brides dress perfectly.  The backdrop was a dramatic impact with crystal strands draped 32 feet wide.

The gold accents of the ornate candlestick with stunning gold stemware created the glamorous feel.

The unique chair band with the large stunning fabric rose add that special touch.
